This food, also known as chana dal vada, makes a great snack with coffee or tea. Chana dal is the main item you need to make this side dish. It is a perfect dish to serve on events and functions hosted at home.

  • 1 cup split Bengal gram (chana dal)
  • 2 whole dry Kashmiri red chillies
  • 2 tsp finely chopped green chillies
  • 1 ½ tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onions
  • 4 tbsp chopped coriander (dhania)
  • 1/2 cup grated fresh coconut
  • 2 tbsp chopped mint leaves (pudina)
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for deep-frying
  • Coconut chutney to serve
  • Clean, wash and soak the dal overnight. Drain.
  • Grind the dal with dry red chillies, green chillies and cumin seeds and a little water to get a thick coarse paste.
  • Add the remaining ingredients and mix well.
  • Shape into small vadas and deep fry in hot oil till golden brown. Ensure that the vadas are cooked in the centre.
  • Drain on absorbent paper and serve hot with chutney.
